A media landscape under pressure

Albania’s media landscape is marked by strong political polarization and increasing pressure on journalists. The public service RTSH, often criticized for its lack of independence, is making technical progress thanks to foreign support. Traditional media reflect the country’s political and social fragmentation, exacerbating existing divisions in Albanian society.

High media concentration

The concentration of media ownership in the hands of private economic interests has increased the direct interference of these owners in the editorial policy of the media. These practices harm the diversity of information, leading to self-censorship among journalists, thus undermining the quality of information and public trust.

Media education still insufficient

Despite these challenges online outlets such as Exit, BIRN, and Faktojeare trying to address the issue of disinformation and promote investigative journalism, particularly on topics like corruption and crime.

Although some initiatives exist to raise awareness about verifying information, media literacy remains limited. Projects like Faktoje combat fake news, but the implementation of a national media literacy strategy remains a priority that needs to be developed.
