Presentation of the activity
To introduce a workshop session, for example, it may be interesting to ask participants to share a piece of information or an event that has recently caught their attention in the news, which will allow everyone to discuss it together.
By using concrete, current examples, reviewing the press at the beginning of the session is a good exercise for putting the workshop objectives into practice and has many benefits.
This exercise allows you to :
– Strengthening the dimension of exchange and co-construction of the workshop by encouraging participants to speak on current topics, which promotes their participation and involvement.
– Integrate or reuse theoretical concepts Previously studied through current events (remind students of the definition of information, the difference between information and opinion, the importance of being vigilant about the nature of the source, and the natural tendency to sometimes prefer sensational and/or familiar information).
– Provide information on young people’s media habits and their relationship with information. We often find that social media is their main source of information (Snapchat and Instagram are commonly cited). This exercise can be an opportunity to encourage them to consult other sources of information that present the news in a different, more in-depth way, such as fact-checking sites that can be followed on certain social media platforms.
Activity schedule
- Each student takes 5 minutes to search on their phone for a piece of information or an event in the news that caught their attention.
- Each student shares this information with the group.
- The student gives the source of the information (Where did they first encounter this information?).
- Their interest in the information (Why did they remember it?)
- The trainer puts this into perspective.
The Balkan context
For this activity, refer to the “Infox” sheets in the “Learn” section of our educational website. This provides teachers with concrete examples of false information that has been believed and shared by citizens in the Balkans.
