A pluralistic but pressured media landscape

Kosovo has a vibrant media landscape, marked by notable pluralism. However, ethnic and political tensions strongly influence the news sector. The public broadcaster RTK, which is supposed to guarantee impartial information, faces accusations of political bias. Private media outlets, although numerous, are often polarized.

Persistent threats to press freedom

Kosovar journalists are facing increasing pressure: physical attacks, gag orders, and a lack of access to public information. In 2024, Kosovo dropped 19 places in the World Press Freedom Index, ranking 75th out of 180.

Insufficient media education

Media literacy in Kosovo remains inadequate, partly due to a lack of coordination between the education sector and non-governmental actors. Initiatives are attempting to raise awareness among young people about fake news and disinformation, but progress is still needed to structure MIL at the national level.
